With the new Opa-locka Tech Hire Center opening, we've welcomed aboard Vanessa Stephen, our new Tech Hire Center Intern. We've asked Vanessa some fun facts about herself so that you can get to know her a little better.
What school did you graduate from?
I graduated from St. Thomas University with a degree in Computer Science.
Where are you originally from?
I'm a local, so I'm originally from Miami Gardens, Florida.
What’s something that has surprised you about your chosen career path?
While Computer Science was originally a female dominated area and computing was considered ‘woman work’, there are now less than 20% of women working in the computer science field.
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
I am passionate about discovering new things, learning, visiting new places, making new friends, volunteering and participating in community works.
What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve ever received?
The best piece of advice I've received related to my field of study. “The tech world is evolving, it is important to keep learning if you don’t want to be left behind.”
What’s your favorite hobby?
I like to go out and enjoy the different atmospheres and vibes Miami has to offer.
Who would you most like to switch places with for a day (could be anyone — a celebrity or even an animal!)?
I would definitely be a tiger because of their courage.
