About The Event
You're invited to the private viewing of the Beyond Tradition African art exhibit.
Contemporary African Artists constantly face the problem of being viewed mainly through the lens of traditional African art traditions. The attitude and assumptions about what art by Africans should consist of has been Western derived and continued to diminish these artists from broader global conversations about present-day culture. Artists from Africa are challenging these Western stereotypes, and the OLCDC is proud to present the Beyond Tradition: Contemporary Sculpture From Africa exhibition.
For a six-month run at The ARC in Downtown Opa-locka, the exhibit explores how African art is viewed globally as it can no longer be limited to cultural practice and geography as defined by Western standards. Beyond Tradition will explore the global appeal of traditional African art and its influence and inspiration on modern life.
This exhibition aims to look past hierarchies and attempts to rethink the ways African art is always evolving and changing the ways we see the world today.
The selected works in this exhibition include works from Bill Karg’s Collection from when he lived in Africa. Most of the works represent sculpting traditions from Zimbabwe and Tanzania where the carving traditions have a long cultural history.
